Has time run out for ?24??
Mar. 11, 2010 9:08 am
Various reports hitting the wires this morning suggest that Fox has decided to end ?24? after its current season, the show?s eighth. The Wrap?s Josef Adalian says that the network has ?all but decided to make the current season of the Keifer Sutherland thriller its last,? and adds that sources close to the series confirm ?end of life conversations? have begun. Adalian goes so far as to say a formal announcement could arrive later this week. That?s not to say the ?24? franchise is completely dead in the water. In February, Billy Ray (?State of Play,? ?Shattered Glass?) was hired to pen a feature-length script in hopes of transitioning Sutherland?s unbreakable hero, Jack Bauer, to the big screen. Reports say Ray?s initial treatment would send Bauer to Europe, which makes sense since the last two seasons have shifted the action from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. and New York City, respectively.
Wizard of Oz set for 3-D remake
Mar. 11, 2010 8:59 am
Inspired by the box office success of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, executives at Warner Bros are pressing ahead with an update of the childhood classic. The studio is weighing up two rival projects which take Frank Baum's original story as their starting point, and will be very different from the 1939 film starring Judy Garland. The first is Oz, produced by the team behind the Twilight franchise and aimed at the teen market. The second, as-yet-untitled film has a darker tone and moves the action closer to the present day, with Dorothy's granddaughter returning to Oz to fight the forces of evil. The script has been written by Josh Olson, whose previous credits include David Cronenberg's A History of Violence. Both projects have been in development for some time, but the surprise success of Alice in Wonderland has spurred Warner Bros into action, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The studio is keen to capitalise on the current vogue for 3-D movies, and believes a new Wizard of Oz film could spawn a franchise. It has been remade before - The Wiz, released in 1978, featured an all-black cast including Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. Other remakes of Hollywood classics in the offing include a new version of My Fair Lady, with Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan frontrunners to take Audrey Hepburn's role of Eliza Doolittle, and Hugh Grant tipped to play Professor Henry Higgins.
Betty White to Host Saturday Night Live May 8
Mar. 11, 2010 8:53 am
It's official: Betty White will host NBC's Saturday Night Live on May 8, WNBC News announced Thursday morning. Besides featuring the Golden Girl, who was the subject of a Facebook campaign to get her the gig, the special Mother's Day episode will also reunite six former female SNL cast members, most of whom happen to be moms: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch. The show's creator-producer, Lorne Michaels, tells USA Today that the Facebook campaign, which kicked in after White's Super Bowl commercial for Snickers, "took on a groundswell. [White as the host] isn't something we would have said no to, [but the campaign] validated that, 'Oh, that'd be fun' ? It was the outpouring of affection from fans, and we feel the same way." And while White, 88, has no children of her own ? except for her golden retriever, Pontiac ? Michaels justifies her Mother's Day appearance by explaining, "She's the mother of us all in comedy."
Kate Gosselin Is Determined to Win Dancing with the Stars
Mar. 11, 2010 8:48 am
Kate Gosselin is a mom on a mission: Win the mirror-ball trophy on Dancing with the Stars. But whether she?ll pull it off is another story. The mother of eight says there?s just a slight obstacle ? dancing, it turns out, isn?t her forte. ?I do want to win. It?s just that the dancing part is getting in the way of winning,? she tells PEOPLE in the new issue. ?In my mind, I?m winning. In my actions, not so much.? Gosselin, 34, says that no matter how long she manages to hold out on DWTS, the important thing is that she does her best. ?If I last two weeks on the show, I?ve shown my kids that hard work and perseverance pays off,? says Gosselin, whose pro partner is Tony Dovolani. ?And if I don?t win, I?ve shown them you don?t always have to come in first. You just have to keep on trying.? The new season of DWTS, with Brooke Burke replacing Samantha Harris as co-host, begins March 22.
