Kirchner Takes Second Feature of Season

Brent Kirchner picked up his second feature win of the season on Saturday night. Kirchner started on the outside of Mike Carlson in the front row of the feature that went flag-to-flag--caution free. Steve Carlson crossed the line second, J Herbst was third. Shawn Pfaff and Tony Bagstad rounded out the top five.

Matt Inglett won the Sportsmen feature with a last lap pass on the outside of Jason Dummer. Inglett edged Dummer by mere inches at the line to grab the checkered flag. Jimmy Gilster was third, Jake Arneson was fourth and Dan Gilster crossed the line fifth.

It was another very close finish in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, as Dustin Bagstad inched out David Cavin for the win at the line. Cavin however, would be disqualified in a post race inspection for illegal camber. That would hand over second place to Kayla Steinhoff and move Tom Luethe up to third, Raymond Hardy to fourth and Andy Moore to fifth.

In the Outlawz division, it was a crazy night of carnage. John Olson--the perennial winner in the division each night it's run--got blocked in, a la "Smokey & the Bandit" and tried to charge to the front with some three-wide racing. His car ended up getting tore up a bit. He finished, but he didn't win. Instead, Tim Steinhoff picked up the checkered flag.

Kyle Swenson won the first Hornet feature and Matt Moore won the second Hornet feature.

Rave Wins First Career Feature

Last year's Rookie-of-the-Year made his first feature win visit to Victory Lane in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model division. Troy Rave was beginning to experience engine problems as the laps wound down, but he held on to score that first win. Todd Korish was second over the line. Matthew Henderson, Brad Powell & J Herbst rounded out the top 5.

In the North Country Contractors Sportsmen division, it was Brian Hesselberg who grabbed the checkered flag. Greg Scheck, Rob Mason Joe Rinartz & Chad Rosendahl completed the top 5.

Andy Moore picked up the checkers for the United Auto Supply Thunderstox division. Kris Heinz, Brad Warthan, Chris Weber & Chad Oehler were second through fifth, respectively.

Kirchner Wins Crash-Filled Feature

There wasn't a full moon out--but it sure seemed like it with the all of the carnage at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Brent Kirchner came out on top in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature. Shawn Pfaff, Nick Clements, Matthew Henderson and Harley Jankowski rounded out the top 5. Steve Carlson & J. Herbst had contact coming off of turn four and heading down the frontstretch. Carlson got the worst of the exchange with his car scrapping along the outside retaining wall. As the field checked up behind...it was mayhem. Bill Niles & Tony Bagstad ended up on top of the inside retaining wall.

In the North Country Contractors Sportsmen Feature, it was Dan Gilster who pulled into Victory Lane. Randy Humfeld crossed the line 2nd. Jimmy Gilster, Matt Inglett & Steve Bachman were the balance of the top 5. There were a couple of incidents--one with Greg Scheck driving it hard into turn three. Scheck spun into the infield and no one incurred any real damage, but several would do a bit of bumping and banging as the checking up and braking began.

The United Auto Supply Thunderstox Feature was won by Harley Jankowski, who probably had his best race night of his career--having posted a top 5 finish in his NASCAR Late Model and then winning (by almost an entire lap) the Thunderstox Feature. Andy Moore, Jake Krueger, Dustin Bagstad & Brad Warthan rounded out the top 5.

John Olson won the Outlawz Feature.

Herbst Wins Again at La Crosse

HERBST WINS AT LA CROSSE
J Herbst put his NASCAR Late Model in Victory Lane for the second time this season on Saturday night. Herbst took advantage of the outside lane on the realignment after the final caution,
which put him on the outside of Steve Carlson. He powered his Ford to the front immediately on the restart.
Carlson would have to settle for second, followed by Shawn Pfaff, Brent Kirchner and Todd Korish.
In the Sportsmen division--it was Jimmy Gilster who picked his way through the field to snag the checkered flag.
Greg Scheck, Matt Inglett, Randy Humfeld & Dan Gilster rounded out the top five.
Chad Oehler won the Thunderstox feature. David Cavin, Jordan Myers, Brad Warthan
and Andy Moore were 2nd through 5th respectively. Josh Inglett won the boat race.

Schendel Wins at WIR

Schendel Wins at WIR
Tim Schendel of Sparta picked up the checkered flag in the ASA Midwest Tour race over the weekend at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, WI. Ross Kenseth took 2nd place and Andrew Morrissey was 3rd. Skylar Holzhausen was leading toward the end of the race and looking rather stout, before brake issues took him out of contention. The Bangor, WI driver would end up being credited with 25th place. Steve Carlson posted an 8th place finish after having to take his first-ever provisional to start the race.

The series heads to Grundy Speedway in Illinois next on Friday, June 3rd.

Herbst Scores Win
J Herbst picked up the feature win on Saturday night for the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models. Todd Korish, who set the fast time for the division was 2nd. Mike Carlson, Shawn Pfaff & Steve Carlson rounded out the top 5.

For the North Country Sportsmen Division--Randy Humfeld won the feature. Dan Gilster, Matt Inglett, Chad Rosendahl & Troy Maier were 2nd thru 5th, respectively.

In the United Auto Supply Thunderstox Division--Jake Krueger snagged the checkered flag. Raymond Hardy was 2nd, Jason Bolster was 3rd, Andy Moore was 4th and Brad Warthan 5th.

Heather Hutchenriter won the Queen Bee Hornet feature.

Kenseth Wins ASA Midwest Tour Opener

Kenseth Picks Up Season Opening Win for ASA Midwest Tour
The 2010 Rookie of the Year for the ASA Midwest Tour picked up the first win of the 2011 season. Ross Kenseth topped a field of impressive drivers--over 36 cars showed up for the event--and dominated the 3rd Annual "Joe Shear Classic." His father, Matt was present and on the radio all day--providing tips and encouragement along with his crew.

Bryan Reffner posted the fastest qualifying time, however after the inversion--it was Kenseth who started from the pole. Sparta's Tim Schendel had a solid run, despite getting caught up in some of the carnage. Schendel finished the race 8th--without a hood on his car. Skylar Holzhausen of Bangor, who qualified 7th ended up having some mechanical issues and was unable to compete effectively. He pulled off early and did not finish the race. Last year's winner of this event--Steve Carlson got tangled up in an early incident and despite efforts to improve his ride--his car was just not the same after that. He also ended up pulling pulling off early and didn't finish the race.

Carlson Takes Checkers on Opening Night at La Crosse

Carlson Picks Up Opening Night Feature Win
Steve Carlson picked up his first feature win of the season on Saturday night for the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model division. Todd Korish was 2nd and rookie Nick Clements was 3rd--however in a post-race inspection--Clements was deemed to have made a ride height infraction and was subsequently disqualified--which put Matthew Henderson in the top 3 for the night.

Jimmy Gilster won the feature for the North Country Contractors Sportsmen division. His brother Dan Gilster was 2nd...and Greg Scheck was 3rd. Andy Moore won the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, with Brad Warthan crossing the line 2nd and Jake Krueger was 3rd. Johnny Olson won the Volden Construction Outlawz Feature.

Kasten Takes Checkers at New Smyrna

Kasten Takes the Checkers at New Smyrna

Rebecca Kasten picked up the checkered flag on Wednesday night at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida. It was the sixth night of racing action in the annual "World Series of Asphalt." Kasten had been very consistent with her most recent performances--posting three consecutive second place finishes in the previous night's races and was more than ready to break through and finally take the win. She started on the outside of row two and made quick work of getting ahead of Anthony Sergi, who started to her inside, before working her way easily around the outside of the machine of Matt Tifft, and then finally setting her sights on leader, Ryan Moore. On lap 11--when Moore pushed high in the middle of turns 3 & 4--Kasten pounced and easily pointed her car underneath his and gassed her way past him coming off of turn 4 to take the lead. She never looked back and in fact, held practically a full straightaway lead for the remainder of the 30 lap feature, which went caution-free.

Kasten, who is a Mequon, WI native has a crew comprised of some well-known La Crosse area wheel and wrenchmen. They are pictured above with her in the Victory Lane shot, along with her mother, Marie. Structurally Sound? NASCAR Sprint Cup is Re-Tooled

NASCAR held a big press conference on Wednesday night to discuss all of the changes coming into play this season. I watched the live coverage on SPEED channel. For the most part, I like the changes. The move to not line up by points, should rain impede qualifying efforts...and instead, set the starting line up by practice times. According to what was said--they would line it up based upon the final practice session times. Good move for the teams to not lose ground just because of Mother Nature.

If rain is not a factor and qualifying is to go off without a hitch, the top 35 in points go out in reverse order of the best practice speed. (Again, based upon the final practice session.) NASCAR is keeping the move they implemented last year, where the cars not in the top 35 in owner points will be grouped and go last in qualifying.

Then there is the re-tooling of the points structure. The winner of each race will pick up 43 points...and the points would drop by one for each subsequent finishing position, all the way down to 1. If a driver wins a race--they score an additional 3 points. Lead a lap? Get one more point. Lead the most laps? Get one more point. Maximum points a driver can score in a race is now 48. I would've asked, had I been in the auditorium, about how many points they will penalize drivers for infractions. (on average...of course, something "severe" would likely warrant the NASCAR police to dock more than "normal.")

They're keeping "The Chase" format. Boo! I guess I never really believed they would drop it.

The top 10 in points will be reset with 10 races left on the season with 2000 points a piece--each driver receiving an additional 3 points per win on the season. Then the 11th & 12th drivers who will be included in "The Chase" will be the two drivers 11th thru 20th who have the most wins. The example they gave to illustrate this is that Jamie McMurray would've made the chase last year and Kyle Busch the year before that, under this new system. It's not a bad idea. However, the 11th & 12th cannot move up with any bonus points from wins at the re-rack going into "The Chase."

So in essence, this restructuring is an attempt to re-energize the fan base and hopefully bring more new fans into the fold. Do you think it will work? Drop me a line!

Emily Sue Steck (Fuchs) and her husband Bud gave birth to their son, Brody Conrad on Saturday, January 8th at 1:49pm.

The little guy weighed in at 7 pounds, 10.3 oz. Mom, Dad & baby are all doing well.

Congrats to Emily Sue & Bud from all of us here at the La Crosse Radio Group, CC106.3 and especially our sister station, Magic 105--that sponsored her when she ran in the NASCAR Late Model division at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Wisconsin's Mahder Wins National Rookie Title

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 27, 2010) – When Chad Mahder was looking for a place to race this season, he decided to run Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisc., because of the benefits associated with racing at a NASCAR-sanctioned track. That decision paid off in a big way as the 25-year-old from Eau Claire, Wisc., earned the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national Rookie of the Year Award presented by Jostens.

“We wanted to race locally,” Mahder said. “Cedar Lake has the competition and the perks like the NASCAR sanction. Things worked out pretty well and we’re proud to be part of it.”
Mahder will be honored at the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards Banquet at the Crown Ballroom at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C, on Friday, Dec. 10.

Mahder placed third in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Wisconsin state championship points--having collected six wins, 13 top fives and 17 top 10s to finish 16th overall in the nation. He won the Impact Printing Late Model Division championship at Cedar Lake, a .375-mile dirt oval. He won five times at Cedar Lake and also picked up a win racing at nearby Superior (Wisc.) Speedway, which is also a .375-mile dirt oval.

Doar Takes 2010 NASCAR Wisconsin Title

It had appeared that current La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway Late Model point leader, J Herbst had a lock on the state title for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series--but the race season was not done. More importantly, Cedar Lake Speedway in northern Wisconsin held their big 3-day race event this past weekend--the last official points weekend for the NASCAR Whelen All-American season.

Pat Doar, whose home track is listed as Cedar Lake Speedway, entered the weekend with only 16 official starts for the series. But he added three more solid runs in each of those feature events at Cedar Lake Speedway. Doar posted a win and two 2nd place finishes. Those performances were enough to push his total on the season to 632 markers--4 more than Herbst, officially giving Doar the Wisconsin title.

Holzhausen Battered But OK After Incident

Steve Holzhausen is recovering from a nasty accident during practice at Dells Raceway Park for an ASA Midwest Tour event. Holzhausen's throttle stuck wide open as he was entering turn three. The car is a big mess, as you can see above and in the other photos HERE, courtesy of Doug Hornickel with Fast Lap Photo.

Holzhausen himself is pretty messed up after the incident. He needed 15 stitches to his chin/face and he also suffered a broken lower left leg and for the most part--a shattered ankle, as well as a broken right pinkie toe. Ligament damage to his left foot is the biggest concern. He had surgery on his foot this week and will likely be laid up for about 10 weeks. Like you--we're all very grateful the incident wasn't any worse than it was and wish him a speedy recovery.

ASA South Africa Event - Race Day

Sunday's ASA Late Model Racing "Free State 500" over in South Africa was filled with plenty of mechanical difficulties for many teams...including Steve Carlson. He was up to 2nd on lap 53 when his engine blew.

Other drivers who experienced some issues included Chris Wimmer, with a broken shock mount and Russ Blakeley, who suffered a broken drive flange to his ride.

The biggest heart break was likely for the guy who had the most experience at the track--Geoff Bodine. He ran out of fuel while leading with two laps left in the race.

John Mickel from England won the race.

ASA South Africa Event - Day 2 Practice & Qualifying

Day 2 of the first ever ASA race to be held in South Africa is already winding down...they are 8 hours ahead of us, which we should bear in mind when we're longing for an adult beverage around 9am any day...

At any rate, the overall fastest time in practice on this second day belonged to Geoff Bodine, who has been working with ASA over in the country for the past several months. Second fastest overall in practice today was Wausau's Chris Wimmer. Then Marc Davis, Tiffany Daniels and John Mickel rounded out the top five in practice times.

The fastest in practice yesterday, Gary Lewis was 6th fastest today. Russ Blakeley was 8th and Steve Carlson 9th in practice. Qualifying would prove to not have much shifting in positions.

Geoff Bodine set the fast time, followed by Marc Davis, with Chris Wimmer 3rd. Russ Blakeley was 5th and Steve Carlson was 7th. The car qualifying prior to Carlson spun out as he was taking his qualifying run and forced a red flag. Carlson said there was more to his car and it should run well in race trim.

There will be no invert for the race tomorrow.

ASA South Africa Event - Day 1 Practice

Anytime a new venture is started...there are bumps to be expected in the road. Especially if said new venture is taking place in a foreign country. The ASA Racing organization has been making preparations for quite some time to hold their first ever intercontinental race at the Phakisa Freeway Raceway in Welkom, South Africa.

West Salem's Steve Carlson is one of the drivers set to take to the track for this event. However, this morning the group hit a few of those "bumps" and the first practice session on the Vegas-style track has been delayed. The Hoosier tires that were shipped over for the event were held up in customs and were about 2 hours late getting to the track. One can only imagine it must've had something to do with the drug sniffing dogs being overwhelmed by the strong scent of rubber. (Kind of like a visit to Farm & Fleet) Custom officials likely had to do a hand search of the massive amount of tires before they could be cleared to go to the Phakisa Freeway Raceway.

At any rate, the tires did eventually make it to the track, but now they are experiencing some difficulties with the inner liners on the tires fitting appropriately into the wheels for the teams. They are needing to alter the valve stem size and location to fit the inner liner. Despite this setback, they expect to have cars on the track within the next half hour.

We've been electronically communicating with Tim Jacobs, team owner for Steve Carlson's ride at La Crosse Speedway & the ASA Midwest Tour. Tim is also Steve's long-time spotter. He tells us that there are already about 2500 people at the track, with an expected attendance of 25,000 for the big race on Sunday. He also says security is VERY high for the event.

Update 1/29/10 @ 8:23am: First Practice Session is done. Steve Carlson was 2nd fastest and his teammate for this event, Russ Blakely was fastest, by .01 seconds.

Update 1/29/10 @ 9:24am: Second Practice Session is done. Gary Lewis from the west coast was fastest this time around. Steve Carlson was 6th overall.

Update 1/29/10 @ 10:05am: Final Practice Session done. Gary Lewis fastest. Then Geoff Bodine, Russ Blakeley, Jaco Correla, Greg Barnhart & Steve Carlson (6th).

They are done at the track for the day, as it's after 6pm over there (they're 8 hours ahead of us). There's a big welcome party planned for all of the participants over there tonight. Steve Carlson will attend with his team (Mike Carlson, Tim Jacobs & Toby Nuttleman) They will have another practice session tomorrow starting at 10am (that's 2am here!) so we'll get updates out there as soon as we can. For sure to post on Twitter (see below). The big race will be held on Sunday at 1pm (that's 5am here).

DMT Done

When DMT Motorsports announced at the end of 2009 that they would be folding up shop---like many other people, I was hesitant to believe it. I mean--seriously? You've locked up several championships--including a National title, secured countless feature wins with your drivers--Kevin Nuttleman, Steve Carlson and Emily Sue Steck...and just like that, with a snap of the fingers--you're done?

I was watching this whole situation unfold in the off season. There were times I wasn't convinced it was "over." What was Tim Jacobs going to do with these three La Crosse cars if no one bought them? Just let them sit? Maybe. But I wasn't sure.

It was late last year when former NASCAR Late Model driver, Mike Koeneke began to make plans to purchase one of the DMT cars. Initial thoughts were that he would be buying Kevin Nuttleman's car--rendering the 10-time track champion without a car available to perhaps return to the track. However, as it turned out--Koeneke bought the car that was piloted by Steve Carlson instead.

When that happened, I thought to myself--well, maybe Kevin will get to run a few races afterall in 2010. I mean, would Tim Jacobs really just let the cars sit if they went unsold? Does anyone ever really know what goes on in the mind of a car owner?

Then last week, Jeff Brown from the La Crosse Tribune wrote the swan song article about DMT--pretty much solidifying the stance of "done racing at La Crosse" for DMT Motorsports. Or did it? I still had my doubts and in the back of my head expected that Kevin Nuttleman would still don his helmet once again at La Crosse. I mean his car is still sitting in the race shop, right?

It wasn't until Saturday night at the banquet to honor the drivers from the 2009 season that reality was spelled out for everyone. Kevin Nuttleman delivered a very direct speech that officially announced his retirement, thanking almost everyone who's had a hand in his 30 years of racing. It sounded a few times like the big farm boy who understands "Big Picture Racing" better than most, was struggling to hold back some tears. And who could blame him? This was IT.

He had a lot of conviction in his words on Saturday night, which ended with a standing ovation from the crowd in attendance at the banquet. Kevin's talked "retirement" plenty of times in the past...but he's never really gone through with it...but then again, so has another #4 we've all followed through retirement and subsequent returns plenty of times.

Memphis 2009 - ASA Late Models (Race Day)

Last Dance at Memphis

It was the final event at Memphis Motorsports Park on Saturday, with the ASA Late Model Challenge Series. A winner would be crowned...and a champion as well by the end of the night. Night being the operative word...as nightfall would play a huge role in how the events would unfold.

Brent Downey & Drew Brannon would start on the front row for the 300-lap feature. Downey would get the jump on Brannon when the green flag dropped and West Salem's Steve Carlson, who started on the inside of row two, would follow him through. As Downey & Carlson came off of turn two--Downey drifted high. Carlson pounced and got under him down the backstretch, and closed the deal as the pair entered turn 3. Carlson would lead the first lap...and a great many overall during the race...until after the first competition caution at lap 100.

Shortly after the second segment started, Carlson would call to his team that he was feeling some vibration in the car and thought he had a tire going down. And sure enough, he did--the right rear. Carlson dove into the pits under green and his team feverishly went to work to change out the flat tire. He would get back out on the track--two laps down.

Carlson methodically picked his way through the traffic, and was able to get himself into position to make up not just one--but both of the laps he was down. He was fortunate to have over half of the race left to get it done. With 10-laps remaining, Carlson would find himself in 4th place. He was able to pass fast qualifier, Tommy Joe Martins for 3rd place before the final caution flag flew for an incident on the front stretch with 7 laps remaining. Carlson was running 3rd, behind Dillon Oliver and Drew Brannon respectively.

Cautions had seriously riddled the entire race. Chris Eggleston's car started on fire. Eddie Hoffman's engine blew up. Lots of drivers drove overly aggressive and ended up in mangled messes and others lost control in fluids that were left on the track from those messes. The night drew on...the sun dipped lower on the horizon...and as it turned out (like last year, only then it was to the USST Truck Series, who ran the last race of the day) the lack of lights at the facility would dictate the end of the race.

Yes, it's true. Despite Memphis Motorsports Park having the new technology of safer wall barriers in the turns...the facility lacks lights for any dusk or night racing. And so, those final 7 laps would be run under caution. No green-white-checkered finish to the Kings Ransom 300. How they were is how it would stand. Dillon Oliver would take the yellow-checkered flag combo, Drew Brannon would be 2nd...and Steve Carlson, after fighting back from a 2-lap deficit would have to settle for 3rd.

Memphis 2009 - ASA Late Models Friday Practice

The engines are roaring for the final weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park before operations will cease for good at the facility. This weekend will feature the ASA Late Model Challenge Series headlining the festivities, with the USST Truck Series as the support class for tomorrow’s racing action.

The weather is fantastic! Especially compared to the frigid temps here last year that were reminiscent of this past Oktoberfest Race Weekend! Today however, we topped out in the 70’s…perfect weather for racing!

For a full rundown of practice times, you can click on the ASA Late Model logo at the top fo the page to navigate to their reports. Of local interest, I can tell you that Steve Carlson—defending winner of the event—was 5th fastest in the 1st practice out of 31 cars that spent time on the track.

Carlson has said that despite some guys being able to cut some fast laps in practice, he wasn’t sure how long their machines would be able to keep up that pace. From his vantage point on the track, many of them appeared to be melting their tires right off of the cars. He said he felt real confident that his car was very capable to maintain solid speeds for the duration of the 300-lap event, like last year.

Qualifying will take place tomorrow at 11am for the ASA Late Models. Thirty-three cars are slated to take their 2 laps of qualifying.

The green flag set to drop at approximately 2:30pm. Jacklyn Daniels will be providing Twitter updates during the race—you can set those updates to be sent to your cellphone when you click on the Twitter link found near the bottom of this page. Below are some photos from the day.

Oktoberfest 2009 - Sunday Update

It was the final and best weather day of the 40th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend. Thirty drivers started the 100-lap ASA Midwest Tour's main event. Six of those drivers were father-son competitors--and well-known Wisconsin racing names: Sauter, Carlson & Holzausen. Tim & Travis Sauter, Steve & Mike Carlson and Steve & Skylar Holzhausen all started the 100-lap feature event. One member of each family finished 1-2-3 in the ASA Midwest Tour Series season finale at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Tim Sauter's son Travis ultimately took the win, but not without a heavy-weight battle from Steve Carlson. The two were involved in an tire-on-tire rub incident, that lifted Carlson up onto his two right-side wheels down the frontstretch. Carlson's car came slamming back down onto the track and was not the same after that. He would have to settle for second place. Steve Holzhausen's would finish third, after his car was compromised by running through the infield grass to avoid a spinning Jonathan Eilen on the backstretch. Oktoberfest 2009 - Saturday Update

Steve Carlson set the fast time for both the ASA North Series and the ASA midwest Series, picking up TWO of the coveted Oktoberfest "Bullets." Steve Rubeck, from the Rockford, IL area set the fast time for the Big 8 Series, running Ryan Carlson's Car. Here are some of the photo highlights from the day.

There was one really nasty accident during the ASA North feature, which occurred after Eddie Hoffman's engine let go...it involved J Herbst smacking hard into Hoffman, as he sat helpless in the middle of the track. That footage can be seen by clicking on our "video" section in the left-hand column...or HERE.

Oktoberfest 2009 - Friday Update

Holzhausen & Carlson Squared

While it was Chris Weinkauf who set the fast time for the "Dick Trickle 99" main event tonight, it's the pair of father-son duo's that most of the locals are talking about this afternoon. Fifty-five cars tried to make it into the coveted top 16 positions this afternoon--as those are the spots that secure a starting position for tonight's prestigious event. Mike Carlson was 6th in time, Steve Holzhausen 9th...Steve Carlson was 13th and Skylar Holzhausen--16th.
The only driver outside of the top 16 who is already secured in the field is Dennis Prunty, last night's "Futures" superlate model feature winner.

Many of our weekly Sportsmen division drivers have changed over their cars to run with the Area Sportsmen division tonight. Rick Schermerhorn was the fast qualifier.

The first green flag will drop tonight at 5pm--and you can get a three-day wristband to cover your admission for the remainder of the weekend for just $65--and that includes admission to the legendary post-race parties tonight as well. John Stevenson is DJing and doing karaoke in the Big Red Barn tonight...and Studebaker 7 will be jammin' over in the Exhibition Center.

Ross Kenseth pictured to the right, practicing his ASA North Series car today. He will be doing double duty this weekend, running both the afore mentioned event as well as the Big 8 Series, where he will be crowned the Champion tomorrow. All he has to do is start the race to secure that title.

Chris Weinkauf was the big winner on Friday night--fast time for the superlates, scoring not only the win in the third and final segment of the "Dick Trickle 99," but he was the overall winner and picked up the unique trophy--which was presented to him by the event's namesake in Victory Lane. Trickle will be on hand the rest of the weekend--and will also be taking part in the on-track autograph session on Sunday.

Oktoberfest 2009 - Thursday Recap

Champions Crowned & Plenty of Carnage on First Night of FEST

We've uploaded several video highlights from the action from Day 1 of Oktoberfest Race Weekend, you can navigate to it by clicking on "videos" in the left-hand column...or if you're lazy, just click HERE. It was a big night for our local racers here at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Congratulations to Jason Stark, who picked up the United Auto Supply Thunderstox Championship...and to Jake Krueger, who won the Thunderstox Oktoberfest Feature. Jason Schaller crossed the line 2nd, but was disqualified after a post-race inspection. That turned 2nd place over to Harley Jankowski, then Brad Warthan was 3rd...Charles Vian 4th...and Kayla Steinhoff credited with 5th place.

Also congratulations to Jes Tenner, who clinched his first North Country Contractors Sportsmen Championship...and to Danny Gilster, who won the Sportsmen Oktoberfest Feature. Jes Tenner was 2nd. Last year's divison Champion, Larry Bolster, Jr. made a return to the speedway and finished 3rd in the feature. Jake Arneson and Tony Leis finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Steve Carlson set the fast time for the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model Division and went on to win the 40-lap event, passing his teammate, Emily Sue Steck for the lead in the waning laps and would settle for 2nd place in the end. Shawn Pfaff was 3rd, Kevin Nuttleman 4th and Thor Anderson rounded out the top 5. Matt Henderson was running up front most of the event, but something appeared to break on his car and he shot hard into the turn 3 wall.

In the R.A.Y.S (Run All Your Stuff) Division--Chad Rosendahl set the fast time. Jason Dummer looked like he was on his way to win the feature, but contact was made with Brett Wenzel on the final lap, which knocked him out of contention and Wenzel went on to win. Rosendahl ended up getting clipped from behind and taken out.

Mike Carlson set the fast time for the Super Late Model "Futures" division. He started 11th after the invert was set and was battling pretty intensely with Keith Bohmsach of Wisconsin Rapids. Contact was made and Bohmsach ended up going into the wall very hard. Bohmsach was OK. Carlson ended up heading to the pits, as something had broken on his car. Dennis Prunty, a Slinger Speedway regular picked up the Super Late Model "Futures" Oktoberfest Feature win.

The Double O novelty event Feature was won by Joe Rinartz.

Holzhausen Wins Fall Spectacular...
Skylar, That Is!

Skylar Holzhausen picked up the Wisconsin Challenge Series "Fall Spectacular" win on Sunday at Marshfield Super Speedway.

Mark Eswein was 2nd and Skylar's father, Steve Holzhausen was 3rd. Sparta's Tim Schendel was 4th.

2009 Hornet Champion

Saturday night, Steve Bornitz finalized his first title in the 4-cylinder division at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Carlson Wins at Gateway

In a companion race to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the ASA Late Model Challenge Series ran at Gateway International Speedway in St. Louis, MO on Saturday night. West Salem's Steve Carlson was the 2nd fastest in qualifying, but after the invert was set--he started on the inside of row 5 for the 80-lap feature.

Josh Hamner led most of the race, but a suspected right front wheel bearing failed him and he ended up relinquishing his lead to Brian Campbell. Carlson was continuing to pick his way to the front real fast...and he would eventually pass Campbell on the final lap--taking the checkered flag, the trophy and the $5,000 prize.

Carlson will be running with the ASA Late Model Challenge Series again next Saturday at Newton, Iowa.

Herbst Wins Championship

Herbst Takes Championship

J. Herbst took the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model Championship on Saturday night, after running a pair of 50-lap features. Herbst finished 3rd in the first 50-lapper and 12th in the second event. When it was all said and done, he had a 33 point cushion over Mike Carlson, who was 2nd in the point standings.

Steve Carlson set the fast time on the night and went on to take the checkered flag in the first 50-lapper. Todd Korish crossed the line 2nd...J. Herbst was 3rd...Kevin Nuttleman was 4th...and Matt Henderson rounded out the top 5.

In the second 50-lap feature, Emily Sue Steck took the checkers, with her teammate Steve Carlson hot on her heels as they crossed the finish line. Shawn Pfaff was 3rd...Kevin Nuttleman 4th...and Mike Carlson was 5th.

The pair of 4th place finishes for Nuttleman and his NJ-4 car, was enough to land the Wisconsin State Title in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. For those confused as to how Herbst could win the track championship and not the state title for the division--it's because NASCAR only counts feature finishes towards the state title--not heat race finishes or qualifying.

In the North Country Contractors Sportsmen Division, Dan Gilster set the fast time on the night--but it was Rick Schermerhorn who took the feature win. Jimmy Gilster crossed the line 2nd...Randy Humfeld was 3rd...Keaton Hilby was 4th...and Rob Curran was 5th. The points battle tightens a bit too--as current leader, Jes Tenner was 10th. Tenner still leads the points--but the gap has closed a bit to just 24 points over Schermerhorn. That championship will be settled during Oktoberfest. (You can see this year's 'Fest schedule below.)

The United Auto Supply Thunderstox Division saw Jason Bolster pick up the win in the feature. Josh Inglett was 2nd...Adam Moore was 3rd...Steve Owen 4th...and Danielle Neary was 5th. Points leader, Jason Stark finished 12th in the feature, and that allowed Adam Moore to close in on him...Stark now only has an 18 point lead over Moore. That championship will also be settled during Oktoberfest.

Herbst Takes the Checkers - August 29th, 2009

Points Leader Herbst--Extends Lead with Feature Win

Qualifying rained out for the NASCAR Late Model division, so the field lined up for all races, based upon point standings. That meant that points leader, J. Herbst would spin the "Wheel of Inversion" to determine the invert for the main event. He would spin a "3," which would be added to "8" to create an 11 car inversion for the feature. (Top 3 finishers from the week before go behind that invert.) Herbst started on the inside of row 4 and slowly began to pick his way to the front. Steve Carlson, who started 9th sliced and diced his way to the front as well and the two would put on an incredible battle for the win. Herbst would end up victorious. Carlson would settle for 2nd.

Todd Korish crossed the finish line 3rd...but would be disqualified in a post-race inspection for a too-short wheelbase. That would turn 3rd over to Mike Carlson...4th to Matt Henderson...and 5th to Thor Anderson.

Shawn Pfaff, who was back out after a horrendous accident last week had his camshaft break on the warm-up laps of the feature and he would end up switching to his back up car, which had been piloted by Tim Schendel.

In the Sportsmen division--Jes Tenner set the fast time in qualifying. Greg Scheck worked his way to the lead early on and hang onto it until the checkered flag fell. Dan Gilster was 2nd...Jes Tenner 3rd...Jimmy Gilster 4th...and Chand Wehling 5th.

In the Thunderstox division, Charles Vian, Sr. would take the win running his son's El Camino. (Charles Vian, Jr. was running Kayla Steinhoff's car, which ended up suffering a broken axle.) Joey Johnson crossed the finishline 2nd, but was disqualified in a post-race inspection for ride height being too low. That turned 2nd over to points leader, Jason Stark... 3rd to Dakota Miller... 4th to Brad Warthan... and 5th to Harley Jankowski.

The Skidders were in action tonight as well...Adam Moore won that event.

	In the Sportsmen "Even" Dash...Rick Schermerhorn (#7) and Steve Bachman (#14) make contact coming for the checkered flag and both spin out. Branden Berg (#35) is the other car coming across the finish line.

Henderson Scores Victory #2 of the Season - August 22nd, 2009

Henderson Scores Victory #2 of the Season

Matt Henderson and his team have been picking up steam as the season winds down and Saturday night punctuated the momentum with his 2nd feature win of the season in the NASCAR Late Model division. Henderson had been battling most of the night with points leader, J. Herbst, before he finally managed to get around him. He ended up assuming the lead after contact between Tony Bagstad and Shawn Pfaff, sent Pfaff spinning down the backstretch with hard impact on the barrier, which sent him into a barrel roll. His car started on fire, but was quickly extinguished by the safety crew. Bagstad was sent to the back of the field on the restart.

Henderson would hold off hard charges from Todd Korish & Steve Carlson for the win. Carlson edged Korish at the finish line...J. Herbst, who had incurred some front end damage during the night finished 4th and Emily Sue Steck rounded out the top 5.

Herbst continues to lead the point--and has extended it by another 6 points...he now leads by 31 over Mike Carlson. Kevin Nuttleman has moved back into 3rd--41 points behind and Shawn Pfaff is now in 4th place--49 markers off the pace.

In the Sportsmen division, Jerrod Loging picked up his first career feature win. Nick Clements was 2nd...Jes Tenner 3rd...Dan Gilster 4th and John Olson, who was the fast qualifier, was 5th.

The race was marred by several cautions. The most notable involved points leader, Rick Schermerhorn, who after intense battle with Tony Leis, involving plenty of contact, had his machine nose hard into the turn 1 wall. He would be towed back to the pits on the hook. He would also lose the points lead. Jes Tenner now takes over the top spot...Schermerhorn trails in 2nd, by 29 points. As a side note, officials have suspended Leis for at least two weeks for his involvement in the incident.

The Thunderstox feature saw Charles Vian, Jr. grab the checkered flag...it was his first official win of the season. Andy Moore was 2nd. And while Chris Weber finished 3rd on the track...he was disqualified in a post-race inspection for illegal camber. That turned 3rd place over to Jesse Vian...4th place to Harley Jankowski...and 5th to Adam Moore.

Jason Stark continues to lead the Thunderstox points. He's increased his margin by 3 more points now...an even 20 points ahead of Adam Moore.

The Hornets were in action as well on Saturday night. Heath Weissenberger won the first Hornet Feature. Kevin Turner won the second Hornet Feature.

Steve Carlson Wins...Finally - August 15th, 2009

Finally...Steve Carlson Puts it in Victory Lane

Who would've thought that it would take until the season winding down for Steve Carlson to put his machine in Victory Lane in the NASCAR Late Model division?! In fairness, Carlson hasn't been running the full season at La Crosse, in lieu of the ASA Midwest Tour. That and he's found himself caught up in several incidents over the past weeks, which have prevented his very fast car from getting to the front sooner.

Brad Powell, who was back in his own ride--complete with new body panels (after being caught up in a mess several weeks prior) pounced on his first opportunity to make his way to the front. Powell led the better part of the feature. Carlson continued to pick his way through traffic--and when he finally got up to 2nd...a caution flag flew for an incident. Carlson took over the lead from Powell with 10 laps to go in the 30-lap feature. (The extra 5 laps, courtesy of Volden Construction--the evening's sponsor.) Powell, would have to settle for 2nd. Todd Korish was 3rd...Shawn Pfaff 4th...and Matthew Henderson 5th.

J. Herbst continues to lead the point standings for the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models. Mike Carlson is in 2nd place--24 markers back. Shawn Pfaff has moved into 3rd place, just 27 points off the pace...and Kevin Nuttleman has slipped to 4th in the standings, 36 points behind.

In the Sportsmen division, it was tight running, as per usual for the first part of the feature. Jimmy Gilster would take the checkered flag...and celebrate a la Ricky Bobby style in Victory Lane. (See photo below) Rick Schermerhorn was 2nd...Randy Humfeld 3rd...Jes Tenner 4th...and Tony Leis was 5th.

Schermerhorn is now in sole possession of the the points lead for the North Country Contractors Sportsmen Division, with a 3 point lead over Jes Tenner. Randy Humfeld is 3rd in the standings, 29 points off the pace.

The Thunderstox Division had another wild feature, with plenty of position swapping throughout the race. Adam Gallagher would cross the line first and take the win. Henry Vian was 2nd...Danielle Neary was 3rd...Wayne Smith 4th and Adam Moore 5th.

Jason Stark continues to lead the United Auto Supply Thunderstox points battle. Adam Moore is in 2nd place--now just 17 points behind. There's a tie for 3rd place between Brad Warthan & Jason Bolster, with both drivers 48 markers off the pace.

	It's Kornfest Weekend in Holmen, so the classic cars were out in force at the Speedway.

Second Feature Win for Steck - August 8th, 2009

Second Feature Win for Steck

Emily Sue Steck picked up her 2nd career feature win in the NASCAR Late Model division...on a hot & sticky night at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. And things were pretty messy on the track as well. One might have sworn it was a full moon again, with all of the incidents and carnage that peppered the field. Mike Carlson, who set the fast time for the night, dogged Steck for the better part of the race, but had his own hands full with his father, Steve Carlson. They ended up finishing in that order, behind Steck. Todd Korish was 4th and Shawn Pfaff 5th.

J. Herbst, who had some mechanical issues with his car, ended up having to hop into a back-up car of sorts. Tom Thill and his car owners, Curt & Kim Eckelberg opened up their ride for Herbst to get into and keep his points lead alive. Herbst finished 6th and is now 22 markers over Mike Carlson, who has moved into 2nd place. Kevin Nuttleman is now in 3rd place in the points, 25 off the pace.

In the Sportsmen division, John Olson battled hard with Greg Scheck for the better part of the feature, before finally jumping out the lead and taking off, pulling about a half a straightaway on the field. Olson would take the feature win. Jes Tenner, who seemed fearless on the outside once again, crossed the line 2nd. Greg Scheck was 3rd, Jerimy Wagner 4th and Jimmy Gilster rounded out the top 5.

There was a nasty accident during the Sportsmen feature that started with contact between Branden Berg & Tony Leis. The pair would make it back out to continue to race, with Leis taking 10th and Berg 11th.

Henry Vian was seen taking the checkered flag and celebrating in Victory Lane for the Thunderstox feature...but was later disqualified in a post-race inspection for illegal ride height. That turned the win over to Adam Moore. Scott Geier was then 2nd, Jason Stark 3rd...Jake Krueger 4th and Rusty Winchel was 5th.

Bagstad Bags Another Win - August 1st, 2009

Bagstad Bags Another Win

Tony Bagstad picked up his 2nd NASCAR Late Model feature win of the season on Saturday night. Bagstad was well ahead of a melee that occured on lap 3 when contact between Steve Carlson & Shawn Pfaff, sent Pfaff spinning down the backstretch--which cause several other cars to spin and wreck. Both drivers would restart at the back of the field...Pfaff ended up finishing 14th and Carlson managed to bring his machine up to 6th by the time the checkered flag flew. J. Herbst followed Bagstad across the line, Todd Korish was 3rd, Mike Carlson 4th and Emily Sue Steck rounded out the top 5.

In the Sportsmen Division, it was a caution-laden feature...six cautions to be exact. Probably the most carnage-filled one was when contact between Matt Inglett & Rick Johnson sent both drivers spinning, before Joe Rinartz came into the fray and got a piece of the mess. Our staff photographer, Joe Gibbs snapped an action shot of the impact when Rinartz came through. It can be viewed below. The most dramatic caution came with one lap to go...Rob Mason was leading, going thru turns 3 & 4, with Steve Bachman on his tail. Bachman made contact with Mason--spinning Mason out--which effectively put both drivers at the tail of the field for the green-white-checkered restart. Dan Gilster, who had been running 3rd, took over the point and brought home the checkered flag. Randy Humfeld was 2nd, Jason Dummer was 3rd and Jimmy Gilster & Rick Schermerhorn were 4th & 5th respectively. Rob Mason came back to finish 13th and Steve Bachman 15th.

In the Thunderstox Division--no one was disqualified after the feature! Yay drivers! Jesse Vian, who had been DQ'd last week for illegal camber, rebounded nicely and grabbed the win this week. The same rebound story holds true for Chris Weber, who crossed the line 2nd this week. Wayne Smith was 3rd, Jake Krueger 4th and Adam Moore 5th.

Adam Moore also picked up the win in the Trailer Race of Destruction. Interestingly enough, this race marks the 50th Trailer Race of Destruction that Track Promoter, Chuck Deery has put on in his career.

Nuttleman Wins #106.3!

Nuttleman Takes the Checkers

Kevin Nuttleman picked up his 2nd feature win of the season--and the 106th of his career on Saturday night at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. It wasn't a cake walk either, given that he had to deftly navigate his way through a major pile up as the field was coming to the green flag to start the 25-lap feature...and then hold off a hard-charging Mike Carlson to grab the win. Todd Korish was 3rd, Matt Henderson 4th and Shawn Pfaff rounded out the top 5. Nuttleman is now just one point off the pace in the standings, behind J Herbst.

The carnage that caused the chaos between turns three & four occured when the front row, comprised of rookie drivers Cole Howland and Thor Anderson made contact. Since the field hadn't even completed a lap (or even started the race) it was a total restart, only with at least a half-dozen cars damaged. Some were able to get back out to run...others were relegated to the pits to hang up their helmets--like Brad Powell and fast qualifier for the night, Steve Carlson.

In the Sportsmen division, it was Jes Tenner picking up the win in the Darus Pettibone Memorial--it was Tenner's 4th feature win for the season--and the Pettibone family put up extra cash for the win, so he pocketed $500 for his efforts. Tenner is steadily moving up in the point standings--only 10 markers behind Rick Schermerhorn, who finished 2nd. John Olson was 3rd, Branden Berg 4th and fast qualifier, Dan Gilster was 5th.

While Chris Weber celebrated in Victory Lane after the Thunderstox feature, he was disqualified during the post-race inspection for illegal front-end camber...as was 2nd place finisher, Jess Vian. That turned the win over to Harley Jankowski and moved Henry Vian up to 2nd, Adam Gallagher to 3rd and Josh Inglett & Thomas Farra were 4th & 5th respectively.

The Hornets were in action as well Saturday night--the two features were won by John Eron & Pete Muenkel.

Todd Korish picked up his first win of the season--after being dogged the last half of the race by Shawn Pfaff, who finished 2nd. Brad Powell was 3rd...J. Herbst 4th & Mike Carlson, who had set the fast time of the night--rounded out the top 5.

Jerimy Wagner lead the entire race and went on to win the Sportsmen feature. Steve Bachman crossed the line 2nd and Rick Schermerhorn was 3rd. Greg Scheck & Keaton Hilby completed the top 5.

In the Thunderstox feature, it was Andy Moore who led flag to flag for the win. Wayne Smith was 2nd, followed by Danielle Neary, Jason Stark & Harley Jankowski, who finished 3rd, 4th & 5th respectively.

Nuttleman Makes It #105 - July 11th, 2009

Nuttleman Takes #105

Kevin Nuttleman scored his 105th career NASCAR Late Model feature win on Saturday night at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Nuttleman was boxed in for most of the 25-lap event, behind a spirited battle between Todd Oliver and Thor Anderson, before he finally worked his way forward. J. Herbst, who was celebrating his 30th birthday, finished 2nd. Shawn Pfaff was 3rd and fast qualifier, Steve Carlson & Adam Degenhardt rounded out the top 5.

Randy Humfeld set the fast time again in the Sportsmen division. But in the feature, it was another birthday boy, John Olson (celebrating his 39th) who took the checkered flag. A side-by-side battle between Keaton Hilby and Matt Inglett held many in the stands captive...and the traffic behind them as well. The two had previously battled like that earlier in the season--only this time, Keaton Hilby came out ahead...picking up 2nd place. Inglett was 3rd, Jake Arenson 4th and Rick Schermerhorn was 5th.

In the Thunderstox division, a big incident pretty much constipated the field between turns 3 and 4. Contact between Chris Weber & Wayne Smith was the cause...and video of that will be uploaded sometime on Sunday to this website. It was a full restart for the field...and it didn't take long for Adam Moore to power his way to the front for the feature win. Raymond Hardy was 2nd, Joey Johnson, Sr. was 3rd and Jason Stark & Josh Inglett were 4th & 5th respectively.

Henderson Wins First Career Feature - July 4th, 2009

Henderson Takes First Career Feature Win!

Matt Henderson wheeled his NASCAR Late Model to Victory on Saturday night for his first career feature win in the division. A late race incident ended up having Emily Sue Steck on top of Bill Niles car, bringing out the caution for a 2-lap shootout for the finale on the feature. Henderson held off hard charges from the traffic coming behind him. Like Todd Korish, who had to settle for 2nd...as well as Kevin Nuttleman, who kept trying the outside, but ended up 5th. Steve Carlson was 3rd and J. Herbst was 4th.

Travis Hancock (#17) who had his best night of the season so far in the Late Models, posting a top 10 finish in the feature...ended up being disqualified of everything on the night for running an illegal carburetor.

In the Sportsmen division--during his Fast Dash, Dan Gilster was leading the pack, with rookie Steve Bachman in hot pursuit--when Gilster's engine let go--spewing fluid onto the track and sending himself and Bachman into the wall. Both drivers were OK after the incident.

Jes Tenner handily won the Sportsmen feature. Jimmy Gilster was 2nd, Branden Berg 3rd and Randy Humfeld & Rick Schermerhorn were 4th & 5th respectively.

The Thunderstox feature was won by Rusty Winchel, with Nathan White crossing the line 2nd. Brad Warthan, Adam Moore & Jason Schaller filled in the remaining spots of the top 5.

Carlson Wins at Hawkeye Downs

Steve Carlson picked up the ASA Midwest Tour--"Keith Fleck Memorial 100" on Friday night. Other locals who ran well at Cedar Rapids include--Bangor's Blake Horstman, who won his fast dash...and went on to place 20th in the main event. Sparta's Tim Schendel finished 6th, and Brent Kirchner was 7th.

Carlson & Powell Each Grab Wins - June 27th, 2009

Carlson Takes the Checkers

Steve Carlson took the checkered flag in the RiverRun 100--ASA North Late Model feature. Ross Kenseth was 2nd, Chris Eggleston was 3rd. Trent Snyder and Eddie Hoffman rounded out the top 5.

In the NASCAR Late Model 25-lap feature, Brad Powell picked up his 3rd win of the season. He held off charges from Steve Carlson several times, due to numerous late cautions. Carlson ended up settling for 2nd...J. Herbst 3rd, Tony Bagstad and Jeff Baker held down the remaining top 5 positions respectively.

Kevin Nuttleman had some electrical issues with his car and ended up dropping out of the feature. Powell takes over the points lead for the NASCAR Late Models--two points over J. Herbst. The USST North Truck Series ran two 20-lap features. John Wood picked up the first feature win...and Curt Barkenrecht won the other.

Herbst Takes Checkered Flag in Feature

J. Herbst celebrated Father's Day weekend, with his daughter after taking the checkered flag in the NASCAR Late Model Division. Tony Bagstad was 2nd, Matt Henderson was 3rd. Shawn Pfaff & Brad Powell rounded out the top 5.

In the Sportsmen Division, Keaton Hilby won his first career feature. Danny Gilster was 2nd, Randy Humfeld was 3rd. Jimmy Gilster & Tony Leis finished 4th & 5th respectively.

The Thunderstox Division had numerous cautions, but Henry Vian survived it all to take the checkered flag. Harley Jankowski was 2nd, Josh Inglett was 3rd, then Jake Krueger & Jason Stark rounded out the top 5.

The Hornet Division was in action as well. Pete Muenkel & Jim Schermerhorn picked up wins in the two feature races.

Steck Wins First Career Feature - June 13th, 2009

Steck Wins First Feature!
Emily Sue Steck picked up her first career NASCAR Late Model Saturday night...still sporting a cast on her left hand from an injury sustained 4 weeks earlier. Steck started from the outside pole and powered her way ahead of rookie Cole Howland. The two put on a spirited battle most of the feature. Cole ended up taking 2nd. Jeff Baker was 3rd, Steve Carlson 4th and Kevin Nuttleman was 5th.

In the Sportsmen division, Nick Clements started on the pole and won his first feature of the season. Danny Gilster crossed the line 2nd. Rick Schermerhorn was 3rd. Keaton Hilby and Randy Humfeld rounded out the top 5. Schermerhorn, Hilby and Humfeld put on one heck of a battle throughout the feature...you can check out that video footage by clicking on "videos" in the left-hand column and navigating to Saturday night's collection of highlights from the night.

It was a night of disqualifications in the Thunderstox division. Feature winner, Chris Weber ended up being DQ'd for illegal springs...as did 3rd place finisher, Jake Krueger...as well as Adam Moore & Chris Swenson. That said--the win was handed over to original 2nd place finisher--Brad Warthan. Jason Schaller was then 2nd, Jason Bolster 3rd...Charles Vian, Sr. & Jason Stark were 4th & 5th respectively.

Powell Wins 2nd of Season - May 30th, 2009

Powell Takes His Second Victory of Season

Brad Powell powered his NASCAR Late Model into Victory Lane Saturday night, marking his 2nd win on the season. The finish propels Powell up to 4th in the point standings. Shawn Pfaff crossed the line 2nd, J. Herbst was 3rd, Kevin Nuttleman 4th and Todd Korish was 5th.

Randy Humfeld won his first regular season Sportsmen feature--and did so by at least a straight-away. Jerimy Wagner was 2nd, Matt Inglett and Keaton Hilby had a stout side-by-side battle the entire feature...Inglett took 3rd and Hilby was 4th. Greg Scheck rebounded nicely after last week's catastrophe and rounded out the top 5.

Dakota Miller picked up his first feature win of the season in the Thunderstox division. A solid battle between Kayla Steinhoff and Scott Geier for 2nd ended with Steinhoff taking the spot. Geier finished 3rd...Jason Stark 4th and Danielle Neary was 5th.

Baker Puts Two in the Win Column - May 23rd, 2009

Baker Makes It TWO In the Win Column!

Jeff Baker returned to Victory Lane for the 2nd time this season, as he handily held off mulitple charges from his competitors, including Kevin Nuttleman--who had to settle for 2nd. Mike Carlson was 3rd. Shawn Pfaff & Brad Powell rounded out the top 5.

In the Sportsmen division--it was a "no start" as the field was out of shape coming out of turn 4...but the carnage ensued anyway. We ended up with a couple of mangled piles of cars. Among the mayhem was the leader of the points heading into the night--Greg Scheck. Some of the others who received some serious damage were Jerrod Loging, Jeff Bagstad, Rick Johnson and Jerry Alysworth.

Rookie Steve Bachman went on to win the feature. Nick Clements crossed the line 2nd. Dan Gilster was 3rd and Jimmy Gilster & John Olson were 4th & 5th respectively.

Charles Vian, Sr. won the Thunderstox feature, which was filled with several incidents as well. The rest of the top 5 in order were: Ben Allen, Adam Moore, Jake Krueger & Jason Stark.

	We had a baloon-fly-over prior to the start of the festivities. This balloon had a huge American flag hanging off of it, in honor of Memorial Day.
A heat race incident saw Chris Skrede (#73) spin up toward the wall...and Kyle Peters (#63) braking quickly, which spun him around and he rode right up onto Skrede's car.

Jeff Baker accepted the "Sardine Award" trophy for his family and friends who squeezed the most people into their vehicle as part of "Carload Night." The Baker clan had 21 adults & 7 children crammed into a van. WOW!

Powell Wins #2 of the Season - May 17th, 2009

Powell Wins!

After dealing with a DQ last week for too wide of a tread width--Brad Powell bounced back in stellar form with a visit to Victory Lane. The win was a nice capper on his birthday week! Powell turned 34 on Wednesday.

There was PLENTY of carnage throughout the night...and surprisingly, most of it was in the Sportsmen division, where only 16 cars finished on the lead lap. Probably the most horrific incident was between Steve Bachman & Ken Lewis, which ended with Lewis upside down between turns 1 & 2. Lewis did not suffer any injuries, which is a testiment to the safety equipment in the cars.

In the Late Models--an incident with contact between Mike Carlson & Emily Sue Steck, ended up spinning Steck down the backstretch and leaving J. Herbst with no where to go. Steck ended up suffering a broken left thumb and now has a cast on it up to her elbow.

The Thunderstox feature had it's own drama...in that the winner everyone saw--Henry Vian...ended up being disqualified for illegal camber. That turned the win over Chris Swenson.

	The Big Event Company had their train on hand for a pit tour for winners of the "Family Track Pak Pass" with the La Crosse Radio Group.
Steve Carlson suffered a blown engine as he took the green flag for his first qualifying lap. He was unable to put a backup engine in--as his teammate, Kevin Nuttleman had blown his engine earlier in the night and he ran the night with the backup engine.
	Dan Gilster & Tony Leis were victims of the carnage during one of many cautions that broke out during the Sportsmen feature.
Ken Lewis took a wild ride that pretty effectively demolished his car. Lewis was OK after the crash, but definitely shook up after it.
	Rick Schermerhorn survived the night to take his first visit of the season to Victory Lane.
Charles Vian, Sr. is headed in the wrong direction during the Thunderstox feature.

The Clock is Ticking Down to Opening Night

Opening night at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway is set to roll Saturday night! There have been plenty of practice sessions out at the facility over the past couple of weeks. And it appears a lot of teams have really been doing their homework in the offseason.

Our driver, Kevin Nuttleman in the NASCAR Late Model division has had a bit of bad luck. He had some motor woes earlier and was forced to miss the open practice that took place last Saturday. The team wasn't sure if the parts would arrive in time for him to get out on Thursday night for the final open practice. Apparently, his luck turned around and the team received those parts and was able to put the motor back together and make it to practice.

Nuttleman is ready for his 30th season in racing to get underway. With 104 feature victories to his credit and 10 championships, he and his team are focusing on adding to both of those tallies this year.
